Bryson DeChambeau has earned the name of being one of the most controversial professional golfers. He is nicknamed “The Scientist” due to his unorthodox yet scientific approach towards the sport.
With all those controversies, he has been able to go from anonymity to becoming one of the world’s best golfers and has been able to rack up some serious money.
Are his unconventional golfing techniques accepted by professional golfers? And who was DeChambeau’s mentor and inspiration? And how did he amass so much wealth?
Bryson Dechambeau, AKA Bryson James Aldrich Dechambeau, was born in Modesto, California, on September 16, 1993, to John Howard Aldrich Dechambeau and Janet Louise Druffel. He won the California State Junior Championship at the age of 16 in 2010.
By 2012, DeChambeau had perfected his golf swing and many college coaches were interested in recruiting him into their college programs, but it was coach Mike Schy’s exceptional mentoring that made all the difference.
Bryson, who was Mike’s pupil, completely incorporated his coach’s unconventional methods into his sport.
This improved his swing drastically which in turn drew a lot of criticism from college scouts who preferred the more traditional techniques of Golf.
Colleges like Baylor and Oklahoma lost interest due to his unconventional methods. But DeChambeau finally received a scholarship to attend the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.
In 2015, Bryson became the first SMU Mustang to win the NCAA and U.S Amateur titles in the same year.
You might be familiar with others who won a similar title; like Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and Ryan Moore. In June 2015, he made his PGA Tour debut as an amateur at the FedEx St, Jude Classic near Memphis, Tennessee.
Here he finished 45th in the field. From there, he played at the U.S Open at Chambers Bay and unfortunately missed the cut by just four strokes.
This made him forgo his senior season with SMU and play professionally in mid-April 2016. He made his pro debut days later at the RBC Heritage in South Carolina where he tied for fourth place.
July 16th, 2017, was a highlight for Bryson as he earned his first PGA Tour victory by winning the John Deere just by a single stroke! He scored 65 in the final round, winning his first title.
From then on, he went on a winning spree. He won the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, and even won The Northern Trust and the Dell Technologies, and let’s not forget his 3rd place win in the FedEx Cup, where he won 2 million dollars. His career took a huge turn when he won the 120th U.S Open Championship and today he is ranked as the number 6 golfer in the world.
Bryson currently sits on the 63rd position on the PGA Tour career money list with 24 million dollars in his bank.
So, given Bryson’s high profile, you can expect a long list of sponsors and companies he is associated with.
Let’s quickly have a look at them. Let’s first look at the equipment a golfer uses; that’s right, the golf clubs. DeChambeau uses nearly a complete set of Cobra golf clubs with whom he signed a multi-year deal in 2016, and the other part of the deal was to wear Puma apparel.
The only non-Cobra clubs are the wedges and putters which Artisan Golf make. Bryson uses them in all of his golf clubs and partners with JumboMax Golf Grips as he only uses massive grips.
He is also a partner of LA Golf, a company that makes golf shafts. He also uses Bridgestone golf ball alongside Tiger woods.
Other sponsors include Rolex, NetJets, Bose, Bentley, and he became the face of DraftKings golf products in 2020.
Most of the financial details of his partnerships have been kept a secret, but one can imagine that he would be getting a lot of cash flow from his exceptional profile.
Bryson may come across as what we call a very health conscious sportsman. His workout routine is quite unconventional because not only is he a pro golfer but he hits the gym hard.
He has added serious muscle to increase his swing speed and distance on the course. In a recent interview for The Dick’s Pro Tips, he mentioned that he loves to perform isolated movements and not do compound exercises.
He fears that these types of exercises would harm his body. So to prevent it, he prefers to train one body part or muscle at a time. The control he has over the game is only a reflection of his disciplined routine.
His typical day starts at around 8 a.m. in the morning. Where he starts off with a strict workout routine, which he repeats again in the evening.
His diet consists of four to five eggs, five to six bacon slices, or even six sausages. He usually adds two pieces of toast or a bagel with cream cheese, along with an apple and grape jelly.
A pre- made protein shakes from Orgain are also a must on his list. The calories in each shake are about 250, according to him.
Supplements aren’t part of his routine. All he’s doing is drinking protein shakes and eating natural foods.
One of Dechambeau’s huge assets are his cars, which he proudly showcases over on Twitter. In August 2018, he announced his newly formed partnership with Bentley Motors on the social media platform.
Then in September 2019, he showed off his new Bentley Continental Convertible before he began his journey in the new golf season.
This vehicle has 22″ ten-spoke directional wheels, twin stitching diamond quilted shoulder and door inserts, sports pedals, and even an embroidered Bentley wings design.
